Benrahma has to replace Fornals
Great battling point today.

But surely Said - if he’s even half decent - has to replace Fornals on the left.

Fornals works hard. He produces something really meaningful (goal or assist) maybe once every three or four games, but he’s not a proper threat. Maybe the middle is his place.

Bowen shows what you need out wide.

If Said can replicate some of Bowen’s magic, we’ll be a much better offensive threat.

Said - Antonio - Bowen .... That will give teams a proper headache.

Agree we need to be more attacking and have more creative players on the pitch. Benrahma was a complete no show against Fulham in the playoff final so he needs to put that record straight.

They both need to play against teams like Fulham

Re: Benrahma has to replace Fornals
A scuffed shot but in fairness, a goal is a goal and he was in position and controlled it well.

Not laying that ball off for Bowen was a criminal waste though. He often wastes possession and chooses the wrong option.

You’re still massively missing the point, to be honest.

Please he scored. I quite like him. But still don’t believe for a second he’s better than Benrahma.

I think im looking at it from an attacking point of view where you are looking at it defensively. Fair point though. Also Benrama might well run his bollocks off.

Re: Benrahma has to replace Fornals
I'm not sure I understand the logic of that - Haller and Berahma would be double reduction in defensive workrate in relation to Antonio and Fornals. I'd be more inclined to play Benrahama with Antonio and Fornals with Haller.

If Antonio is fit I'd keep it as it's been up to now with Antonio and Fornals anyway for this match.

The question is whether Antonio is fully fit

Good call.

Antonio with Fornals.

or

Haller with Benrahma

I would go with that.

I think it depends on if Antonio is fit for me. If we have Haller up top supported by Fornals that is pretty pedestrian to say the least, they will be playing totally in our half i would think with Bowen the only threat in behind. If we dont give them anything to think about the other way it will be a tough ask.
Personally if Antonio is fit i wouldn't change it but we need some threat going forward if he isnt and i dont see fornals or haller for that matter worrying them to much.

Yeah I get that mate.

Just thinking that against Liverpool we won't have a lot of the ball and so a player like Benrahma is compromised in that situation.

Or we could give their rightback something to think about going the other way a bit like villa did with grealish?

Me too. He never stood out to me as having a bad game.

But i suppose if that is him having a bad game then happy days!

Interesting that. I thought Bowen played okay, but the data clearly says otherwise.

Re: Benrahma has to replace Fornals
Personally I would keep Fornals in for the Liverpool game. We are going to be doing a lot of covering space, tracking back, marking and will have to keep our shape rigid. Fornals does all of that very well and knows the system.

I think to throw Benrahma in would be a mistake.

Watch how the game goes. If we do find ourselves still in it with 15-20 to go and it looks like we could stretch Liverpool then bring him on.

Our November fixtures is where a player like Benrahma can make a difference with his attacking ability. Against those teams we will have more ball and there will be less reliance on defending as a whole team.

I agree that it's as much about positioning and that those stats don't tell the whole story, but just for the record, Antonio went off and Bowen moved into the middle just after City scored. Antonio had signaled to the bench before the equaliser, so who knows, maybe that distracted some of the players for a moment, because apart from their goal, I can't remember Coufal getting done so badly.

Re: Benrahma has to replace Fornals
Interesting about Bowen. Thing is it’s as much about just positioning as the physical act of making interceptions etc. When I couldn’t watch the game I followed it on the bbc feed - first half, coufal was getting loads of praise and keeping cancelo nullified. As soon as a Antonio went off and Bowen moved, coufal got skinned twice and booked.

That points to a great understanding between the two that disappeared when yarmolenko came on

Re: Benrahma has to replace Fornals
We can all see Moyes' issue with this coming.

Moyes likes his central midfield players - whether it is two or three of them - to be combative types who can look after themselves. Even his supposedly more 'creative' ones, traditionally.

So if he moves Fornals back inside to an attacking central midfield role, where he is probably best suited, then Moyes won't like the loss of physicality in there.

Particular as it will mean Fornals might slot in as the attacking midfielder behind a front three of Bowen, Antonio and Benrahma (that's if we play the 451/433 thing - we haven't been doing that, of course). With the exception of Antonio, that's not a physical front line, either.

I think Moyes would be relucatant to make such a change, because he will worry that his side would be too physically weak anywhere in advance of Soucek and Rice. But who knows until we give it a try?

Just hope the side keeps up this good form. Taking good points off Spurs (still getting over that comeback!) and Man City after two wins - promising, finally, from Moyes.

About Bowen

I didn't think he had as bad a game as this, but here's a clip form an article about him

The 23-year-old could only display enthusiasm against Manchester City, however, as he failed to register a single key pass or shot on goal, while only winning two duels, per SofaScore.

The Leominster-born forward won each of his duels on the ground but only attempted four, while losing each of his two aerial contests, losing possession 11 times, misplacing seven of his 13 attempted passes (meaning a meagre 46.1% pass success rate), failing to connect with a teammate with his only cross and misplacing four of his five attempted long balls.

Right-back Vladimir Coufal was also given no defensive support from the right-sided forward, with Bowen offering just one clearance to zero interceptions or tackles.

Bowen further turned over possession by losing out in two of his three attempted dribbles, as the 23-year-old recorded SofaScore’s lowest match rating by any player for either side at 6.3 out of 10, with Man City ‘keeper Ederson (6.4) the worst-performing member of the visiting team.

Personally I don't think that tells the whole story, but it adds a bit more info, and I can't believe he scored less than Haller according to SofaScore!
